Overarching branding and strategy
Artist: Michael Schlitz
Tasmanian-born brothers Jonathan Hughes and Matthew Hughes established Mewstone Vineyard on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the tiny hamlet of Flowerpot. They create expressive single site wines with a minimum of intervention and this approach has won them lots of fans and accolades.
The Mewstone labels celebrate the art and craft - with minimalism. The square front labels solely feature the artworks by Michael Schlitz, leaving all the branding and information to the typographic back labels. Michael Schlitz, a printmaker in the Huon Valley Tasmania created these unique artworks for the labels using copper etching.
Recently Mewstone Wines was crowned by Halliday 2019 Best New Winery of the Year. Jonathan Hughes from Mewstone Wines, Tasmania has also just been announced as one of the 2019 Young Gun of Wine ‘Top 50’. Jonathan won ‘The Ootra BEST NEW ACT’ in last year’s awards, so congratulations and good luck for this year! The annual Young Gun of Wine Awards searches for, showcases and celebrates Australia’s young guns of wine. The Top 50 includes 19 winemakers from South Australia, 13 from Victoria, eight from Western Australia, seven from New South Wales/ACT, two from Tasmania and one from Queensland. The Young Gun of Wine 2019 winner will be announced in Adelaide in June.
